Friday Finds – Lucy Buffett’s Lulu’s

Several weeks ago, Jason and I were live on Facebook celebrating Margarita Day at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, located at Broadway at the Beach. It only seemed fitting to try out Jimmy Buffett’s little sisters new dining and entertainment spot in Barefoot Landing.
Welcome to Lucy Buffett’s Lulu’s; a place where food, family, and fun all connect!

A vibrant gift shop, huge beach bar, and array of indoor and outdoor seating surrounded us as made our way into the 17,000 brightly colored restaurant. As true vacationers that Jason and I are, we decided to take the outside area overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway for a fantastic view.

The gulf coast inspired menu is host to many delicious burgers, shareable appetizers, and fresh seafood. There is also a variety of sandwiches, salads, and delectable sweets such as the key lime pie!
Many recipes were inspired by Lucy Buffett’s Alabama Gulf Shores upbringing.

After lunch, Jason and I made our way around the rest of Lulu’s property. Namly to Lulu’s Beach Arcade which opened up less than a month ago! Skee-Ball, Grand Piano Keys, and Super Shots Basketball are just a few of the arcade games we were able to play. The arcade is great for children and adults.

Besides the lively arcade and delicious restaurant, there is also a large sandy beach area on the property.
Come enjoy drinks, listen to live music, and soak in the Myrtle Beach rays.
If you would like something more active, gather up a team and play a round of sand volleyball or climb the three foot story ropes course.

Lucy Buffett’s Lulu’s in North Myrtle Beach connects food, family, and fun into one truly incredible experience! Lulu’s is a fantastic choice to unwind and kick back into the island lifestyle on your next Myrtle Beach vacation with Palmetto Vacation Rentals.

Friday Finds – Run to the Sun Car Show, Myrtle Beach

“The boys are back in town, the boys are back in town!” Anyone else remember this 1976 top hit song by the Irish Hard Rock Band, Thin Lizzy? Even though I was not born in that memorable era, my mind kept replaying that song as Jason and I attended the Run to the Sun Car Show yesterday at the Old Myrtle Beach Square Mall by the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Instead of the boys are back in town, let us change it to souped up corvettes, 1950s Hudson Hornets, and sleek red 1932 Ford Model B antiques. We had an awesome time exploring the 3,000+ vintage automobiles, trucks, and car part vendors. As Jason graciously put it, “It was if all my favorite matchbox cars were real and in one place.” His favorite was the sleek and black 1970s Dodge Challenger. Mine on the other hand was Elvis Presley’s Famous 1950s Pink Cadillac.

Do not worry that you missed out-the fun is only beginning. Today and tomorrow, the Pee Dee Street Rodders are back at it! The show location is at the Old Myrtle Square Mall located between 21st & 29th Ave. on Kings Highway. It is free entry for all nonparticipants and held between 8:00 AM-5:00 PM on both days. Not only will you be able go back in time as you explore renovated Volkswagen buses and exclusive Plymouth Superbirds, but you will have time to interact with the car owners themselves and enjoy delicious barbecue.

Run to the Sun Car Show is truly for everyone! Believe me, I know little to nothing about measuring torque, turbochargers, and engine displacement. Jason on the other hand knew almost every car model we passed by and a vast array of car lingo. Be ready to be enthralled by everything that the show has to offer!

There will be over $10,000 given away in prizes throughout the three day events. Also the proceeds from the Run to the Sun Car Show will go towards Children’s Miracle Network, Horry County Benevolent Fund, and Grand Strand Miracle League.  Last year alone they donated $97,000.00!

Now that the basics are covered, get ready to engage the clutch, turn on the engine, release the handbrake, and shift into the appropriate gear. Or you can just turn on your car and go into drive mode if you have an automatic automobile!

It’s time to ride into the Run to the Sun Car Show!

Run to the Sun Car Show Details:
Dates: Thursday, March 21, 2019- Saturday, March 23, 2019
Times: 8:00 AM-5:00 PM

Location: Former Myrtle Beach Square Mall (2501 N. Kings Hwy, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577)

Friday Finds – Johnny D’s, Myrtle Beach

Last night you arrived into your beautiful condo rental in Myrtle Beach and today is your first official day of vacation! Waking up to the mesmerizing sunrise and beach sounds has your stomach starting to rumble. It’s breakfast time and you’re ready for your first taste in Myrtle Beach!

With over dozens of breakfast and brunch options along the Grand Strand, one might be overwhelmed in which one to choose. Our selection of choice is Johnny D’s Waffles & Bakery!

Chosen by the Food Network in 2018 as the Best Waffles in South Carolina, the restaurant(s) have taken the beautiful art of breakfast and lunch and perfected it into a worthwhile and memorable tasting experience!

Jason and I were able to visit Johnny D’s Waffles & Bakery Myrtle Beach location this past Monday morning. Immediately walking into the joint, we felt right at home with the comfortable beach styled interior and “diner vibe” feel.

As excited as Jason and I were to choose what tasty breakfast choice we wanted to try, we both were on a mission to see what all the hype was regarding the famous red velvet waffle! We chose it as our breakfast “appetizer.”  As the red velvet waffle made its way over to our table, our mouths started watering.

We suddenly became those people who started organizing the silverware and table appropriately to get a worthy instagram photo of this beaut! After a few minutes of just gazing upon this cream cheese icing, red velvet cake batter waffle goodness, we needed to see if it tasted as excellent as it looked. We split the waffle in half and dug right in.

The only word that I can come up with to explain this waffle is “unforgettable.” Believe me, this was unlike anything that I had ever tried. Jason just kept repeating, “It’s tough to believe that this is actually breakfast.” We now understand why Johnny D’s Waffles & Bakery was voted Best Waffle in South Carolina!

As you read this post, you may be thinking, “Glad you enjoyed this red velvet waffle, but is this all Johnny D’s Waffle has to offer?”

My answer would be a flat out no. The menu has over a hundred options ranging from premium breakfast omelettes, one-of-a-kind french toast treats, and classic eggs benedict. There are three available menus (early bird, breakfast, lunch) which can be viewed here.  For anyone with dietary specific restrictions, Johnny D’s Waffles & Bakery also offers a wide selection of gluten free options and recipes made with cage free eggs and antibiotic free chicken.  Jason, being the true southern breed gentleman that he is chose the classic Chicken & Waffles option. I tried the satisfying Turkey Delight Omelette.

While there, I also had the enjoyment of meeting with the renowned and lively Chef Jamie Daskalis! Originally from New York, Jamie began working in the culinary world from the ground up through her father’s four restaurants near the big apple. With over fifteen years of experience in the food industry and a degree in Baking and Pastry from the Culinary Institute of America, Jamie’s knowledge and passion for the trade expands far and wide.

When asked about what her favorite part is of heading Johnny D’s Waffles & Bakery, automatically she said, “the customer’s reactions!” Jamie is all about providing satisfaction, surprise, and excellence to everyone who walks through her doors.  She has personally chosen every item on the menu and is constantly looking to advance new menu options fit for her customers delight.

When not driving the Johnny D’s Waffles & Bakery train, you can find Jamie being a powerful activist for Autism Awareness in the community and spending quality time with her seven year old autistic son, James. In the restaurant, they are currently selling t-shirts and bracelets to raise support for two local organizations, Champion Autism Network and SOS Health Care. Learning more about Jamie and her amazing passions for the community made Johnny D’s Waffles & Bakery even more set apart from the other local restaurants in the area. When asked what is on the horizon, Jamie hinted at a new cookbook coming out in 2019 featuring over 90 recipes with less than 140 ingredients and a possible new business venture.

Now that you have a quick glimpse into the powerhouse behind the delicious restaurant and review of a few tasty options being offered, it’s time you actually have a taste for yourself!

We know your stomach is still grumbling and ready for some tasty breakfast on your next Myrtle Beach vacation. Treat yourself and head on over to one of the two Johnny D’s Waffles & Bakery locations in the Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach area. Jason and I might see you there!

Friday Finds – It’s Sugar! Myrtle Beach

It’s Sugar is a must stop on your next Myrtle Beach Vacation!

If you are looking to experience child-like euphoria on your next Myrtle Beach vacation, be sure to check out one of the most unique shops on the Grand Strand! Located at Broadway at the Beach and Barefoot Landing, It’s Sugar will have you landed right in the middle of sweet’s heaven.

Jason and I were able to visit It’s Sugar at Broadway at the Beach this past Wednesday during a mid-day snack break. Immediately upon entering, we felt like we had just entered into candy paradise! Huge boxes of Nerds, giant five pound edible gummy bears, and a large jelly bean wall were just a few of the items we first noticed. To say Jason and I were excited is an understatement!

Jellybean Heaven!

Everywhere we turned, we would be met with more and more captivating and colorful candy. Ranging from travel size sour patch kids candy perfect for the afternoon goody to giant one pound reese’s cups to share with the family, the options were endless. Believe me, Jason and I were ready to devour the chocolate malt balls and oversized rice krispy treats right there in the store. But through self-control, we were able to continue our adventure through candyland.

It’s Sugar also offers a variety of gifts perfect for their customers to surprise their loved ones with! Going with the theme of It’s Sugar “the bigger, the better”, we found gigantic cuddly stuffed bears, emoji pillows, and candy boxes sets. Along with that, their were traditional size candies such as M&M’s and Lollipop’s that you can take back to your vacation rental. It’s Sugar truly has something for everyone. The store is designed to bring out the child in every adult.

Even the locals love it!

It’s Sugar was originally founded in 2006 by Jeff Rubin in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Since then, It’s Sugar has expanded to over 100 locations throughout the country. This place is taking the candy retail industry to the next level.

Be sure to taste and relish in all the sugar you love on your next vacation to It’s Sugar in Myrtle Beach and be sure to book your stay with Palmetto Vacation Rentals. Your taste buds will be shouting a big thank you!

Friday Finds – Hi-Fi Coffee Bar

In this week’s edition of Friday Finds, Alison and I made our way down the storied Myrtle Beach Boulevard where we visited a truly unique Myrtle Beach coffee shop. Hi-Fi Coffee bar started as a project for businessman, Chris Walker, who has a great love for art and nostalgia.

Everyone Loves INXS!

What makes Hi-Fi different than your run-of-the-mill coffee shop is the fantastic, comfortably retro aesthetic that makes you feel right at home. Here you’ll find a large collection of vinyl records (patrons can pick out and play at their leisure), a muli-cade arcade machine complete with Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Frogger, and more, and a hodgepodge of cassette tapes. You’ll also find framed album covers, and Atari 2600 cartridges, and even a 1980’s handheld football game. It’s all tastefully placed and never feels cluttered. What a great place to reminisce, unwind, or contemplate life’s mysteries!

Fresh Ingredients and Retro Decor

The atmosphere is all well and good, but let’s get to the real reason we visited today: The Coffee. Our barista Connor, was excellent in explaining the many options that they have and let us know that if we “Ever thought of being Mad Scientists, working as a barista is a great start!”. Soon, I saw what he meant as he went to work on my Caramel Frappe and Alison’s Coffee Frappe. Connor and his colleagues take great pride in producing the perfect cup for each order and it was entertaining to see the caffeine concoctions come to life. Boy did they ever! Both Frappes were better than anything we’ve had at that larger, ubiquitous coffee empire. Definitely Hi-Octane in nature, they helped us shake off the afternoon cobwebs.

Free to play. Who could ask for more?

The next time you visit the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, definitely step in for a cold or hot treat that will help you get to where you’re going!

Hi-Fi Coffee bar is located at 918a, Ocean Blvd in Myrtle Beach and are open 9 a.m. to Midnight.

Friday Finds – The Uncommon Chocolatier

The highest quality of ingredients and flavors!

Welcome to our first installment of Palmetto Vacation Rentals “FRIDAY FINDS”. Each week we’ll be visiting local businesses and attractions, bringing visitors to the Grand Strand a taste of new places to visit and focusing on attractions that are off the beaten path.

This week we visited “The Uncommon Chocolatier” a brand new fudgery located in the heart of The Market Common in Myrtle Beach. Made from the finest ingredients, The Uncommon Chocolatier offers a variety of handmade fudge, chocolates, and gift items.

Fudge is a staple of Myrtle Beach shops, restaurants, and markets. For half a century, travelers have been able to find fudge at mom and pop stores all along the Grand Strand. Usually only offering Chocolate and a few other flavors to eager travelers, the fudge presence here is as ubiquitous (and drab) as saltwater taffy, hermit crabs, and $99 cent shark tooth necklaces. But, No longer! Today, Alison and myself have discovered a culinary pleasure that would make Gordon Ramsay silent with content.

Originating in Pittsburgh, The Uncommon Chocolatier was started by Christine Falvo. Christine was inspired by her mother, Teresa and now has a third generation of fudge makers in her granddaughter, Elle, whom we spoke with this afternoon.

With over 35 varieties of fudge, chocolate-dipped fruit, and even specialty items, such as chocolate footballs, you can easily spend a whole day sampling and debating which is your favorite. Good luck, though – they are ALL fantastic! Some of the most amazing taste combinations and textures can be had such as: Crème Brule, raspberry cheesecake, cherry bourbon, chocolate strawberry, birthday cake, bananas foster, peanut butter, mint chocolate, red velvet, and “Unicorn Poo” (Cotton Candy – it’s delicious, I swear!).

The décor of the establishment is classic and inviting and is only rivaled by the breathtakingly artistic designs and textures of the main attraction – the fudge. Great care is taken by their artisans Elle and Brittany as you’ll find candy, nuts, and other delectable toppings that make it almost too pretty to eat – ALMOST!

The next time you are near The Market Common, take time to stop in and sample this very unique delight on the Grand Strand. You’ll be glad you did!

You can find the Uncommon Chocolatier at 3351 Reed Street in the Market Common. Be sure to like and follow them on Facebook under “The Uncommon Chocolatier”.

Top Free (or close to it!) Things to Do in Myrtle Beach

Top Free (or close to it!) Things to Do in Myrtle Beach

By

Jason Coker

Myrtle Beach in South Carolina is renowned as a vacation spot that the entire family can enjoy, but it can get expensive when you factor in entertainment for everyone. When you’re on a family vacation, you need to get the most out of the money you’re spending. This is the reason why we have come up with a list of free things you can do at Myrtle Beach. These include the following options:

Gorgeous, Serene, Unspoiled – Huntington Beach State Par

·        Check out the Beach

Of course! The beach is the main reason why you have decided to visit! With over 60 miles of gorgeous, pristine white sand it’s no surprise why Myrtle Beach is one of the top destinations on the entire East Coast. Not only is the beach fantastic in front of your vacation rental, there’s also miles of unspoiled and undeveloped oceanfront located right down the road at Huntington Beach State Park. At Huntington Beach State Park, there’s tons of wildlife such as water fowl, otters, sea turtles, and especially alligators! You’ll be able to take a stroll through the live oaks and pines as you make your way to Atalaya Castle, a 1930’s Moorish-style castle with exceptional views. There is also camping, picnic areas, and perfectly located across from the gorgeous Brookgreen Gardens. Check it out here: https://southcarolinaparks.com/huntington-beach

Vereen Memorial Gardens is the perfect place to unwind

·        Parks

Myrtle Beach has a lot of great parks nearby that are beautiful and provide you with the ideal spot to relax during the day. The low country is known for beautiful rivers, lakes, ponds and live oaks. You’ll be able to escape the hustle and bustle of tourists looking for entertainment as you watch the wind lazily play with the hanging Spanish moss. There are dozens of parks with playgrounds and picnic areas where you can sit and let the kids have fun during the day. You can check out Grand Park or Valor Park, where you can stroll around the lakes and have fun on the playgrounds. Many parks on the Grand Strand can be reserved for family and group events and are quite inexpensive.

There is also the Vereen Memorial Historical Gardens that have more than 100 acres of amazing vegetation and wildlife for you to explore. Here, there’s plenty of shaded paths to explore amongst the live oaks and there’s plenty of opportunities to spot deer, raccoon, and possum tracks on the sand. Ask a local how you can do some crabbing or simply relax on the shell beach along the waterway and marsh. There’s family swing sets that overlook the marsh as well as a picnic area. Vereen Gardens is also very pet friendly, so be sure to bring fido! https://scgreatoutdoors.com/park-vereengardens.html

Savannah’s Playground: For All Children

Also, be sure to check out Savannah’s Playground located in the Market Commons. Savannah’s Playground is free and open to any one, the playground is named after Savannah Thompson, a Myrtle Beach native with Williams Syndrome who is actively involved in the Grand Strand community. It’s proudly the Southeast’s first “Enabling Playground” where all equipment is ADA approved and children of all needs can socially interact and have a great time. It’s a multi-acre park that is perfect for a great day of inexpensive entertainment and fun. Being in the heart of the Market Commons, it’s a great place to play, relax and then get lunch, dinner, or a movie. Check it out here: http://savannahsplayground.org/

The Carolina Country Music Festival is one of many throughout the year on the Grand Strand.

·        Festivals

Myrtle Beach plays host to various annual parades and festivals throughout the year and you can take part in any festival during various seasons. The summer months bring about the MayFest that has nightly celebrations on the Boardwalk. During spring, you can check out the St. Patrick’s Day street parties and the Canadian-American Days Festival. The Carolina Country Music Festival is one of the South’s biggest music events. Fall brings several Oktoberfest events, a Greek Festival, the Endless Summer Festival, and more. Winter is also a great time for car shows, Holiday Events, Food Festivals, and Sports. https://www.visitmyrtlebeach.com/things-to-do/events/festivals/

One of the best ways to find out inexpensive and free things to do is to ask your vacation experts at Palmetto Vacation Rentals! We can let you know what’s going on in the Grand Strand no matter what you like to do. See you soon!
