Pavilion Amusement Park: A First Hand Experience 2019 | Myrtle Beach

If you enjoy amusement park rides, come on over to the Pavilion Amusement Park located at Broadway at the Beach on your next Myrtle Beach vacation! Yesterday Jason and I decided to head over to the Pavilion Amusement Park to see what all the hype was about at this this popular Myrtle Beach hotspot for locals and tourists alike. Rides such as “The Beast,” “American Swing,” and “The Rocket” intrigued our curious kids at heart personalities!

When we arrived at Broadway at the Beach, we were amazed at the variety of rides being offered to people of all ages. The Pavilion Amusement Park was divided into three different areas at Broadway at the Beach: East Park, Central Park, West Park.

East Park: Are you a fan of classic amusement park rides?

East Park has a fabulous array of original rides from the historic Pavilion and new additional rides. The Pavilion – originally located at the Myrtle Beach Ocean Boulevard officially opened in 1948 and was host to over 40 + popular rides. After being closed in 2006, several of the popular rides from the historic landmark such as the Famous Carousel and Pirate Ship were transferred to Broadway at the Beach. East Park offers rides for all ages!

Central Park: If you are a thrill seeker, this is the area to come to!

Central Park is the area that Jason and I went to! Located right next to the Broadway at the Beach Guest Services and Tsunami Surf Shop, Central Park is easily spotted through it’s 80 foot tall slide and other exhilarating rides. The ride that we were able to go on was the American Swing. Recently added to the Pavilion Amusement Park, the American Swing is the closest sled ride you will be able to take in our sunny and hot Myrtle Beach. Up to two riders can get into one of the twenty sled cars.

Jason and I decided to take our own cars during this exciting ride to get the full experience. This ride is not for the faint of heart! In less than seconds, Jason and I found ourselves with our hands in the air screaming as we circled around the American Swing in our hanging sleds. We had a blast and thoroughly enjoyed the full eight minute experience!

As a side note, the American Swing is one of the lesser adrenaline pumping rides compared to many others in Central Park. If you are looking for a serious thrill ride, my suggestion is to try the Speed XXL! With speeds of over 50 mph and heights reaching up to 130 feet with rotating seats. This ride will have you bouncing out of your seat – literally.

West Park: Calling all the kiddos!

Over at West Park near the popular Myrtle Beach Wonderworks is where you will find the best rides for your little ones. Popular rides such as the Myrtle Turtle kids coaster, Mini Teacups, and Broadway 360 Observation Wheel have become family favorites over the years. The rides being offered at West Park also have less restriction on heights and age!

An extra bonus to the Pavilion Amusement Park– during the summer season at Broadway at the Beach, there is a beautiful firework show happening at 10 PM every Tuesday and Friday! Come eat, play, and enjoy all at Broadway at the Beach this summer.

Myrtle Beach Cupcake Crazy!

Do you like cupcakes? Of course! But How much?

This July 4^th, 31 brave and determined souls tested their cupcake mettle in the 8^th annual Croissants Bistro and Bakery Cupcake Eating Contest. The contest is held each year at the beautiful Grand Dunes Marina in Myrtle Beach, where you can find fun games, vendors, and the entertaining Patriotic Golf Cart Contest.

This year was the first time for your blog heroes, Alison and Jason, and we had a blast! The MC kept everyone involved and the music selection was upbeat and fun! We talked with several contestants and they discussed their strategies for victory. Many said the same technique: “Lots of Water”! Each contestant ponied up $20 for their entry and received a t-shirt and more importantly – their chance for cupcake immortality! Proceeds from the event went to Backpack Buddies and Help4Kids.

Right as the opening horn sounded, the focused contestants began stuffing their faces. After a few moments, it was clear who the true contenders were. 3 or 4 of these masters of mastication distanced themselves from the herd as they looked like a cross between Hungry, Hungry Hippos and Pac-Man! They would shovel in a cupcake, take a swig of water, gulp, repeat.

When the dust settled and the final horn blared, there stood one man, who had tasted the glory of the promised land before! Mark Lyle had eaten a total of 35 delicious cupcakes and was declared champion for the second straight year. Everyone cheered and a great time was had by all. See you there next year!

If I Had My Little Way, I’d Eat Peaches Every Day!

This week’s Friday Finds sees your heroes reunited, and it feels so good!

After experiencing a once in a lifetime month-long mission trip to Thailand, Alison returns to experience a Myrtle Beach Institution of culinary delight!

Built when FDR was still in office, Peaches Corner is one of the most visited and recognizable landmarks on the Grand Strand. Built in 1937, Peaches has delighted both vacationers and locals for over 80 years!

Located in the heart of the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk on Ocean Blvd, Peaches features some of the absolute best hot dogs, burgers, and other sandwiches in the area. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a seasoned veteran traveler to Myrtle Beach, you owe it to yourself to try one of their historically excellent “baskets” with fries or some of the most delicious (and LARGE!) onion rings around. You won’t be disappointed.

Peaches gets its name from the Peach Family who opened the restaurant in 1937 and operated it for over a decade. Back then, hot dogs sold for only 15 cents and you could get 2 for a quarter! Beer was only 10 cents! Prices are still excellent, and you get a ton of great food for a great price.

One of my earliest Myrtle Beach memories is sitting outside Peaches and at their famous counter, watching all the fun and activity of excited tourists relaxing and having fun and nothing has changed. Sitting there today, feeling that refreshing ocean breeze, while watching the hustle and bustle of folks having a big time made me feel like I did when I was a little tyke. Now, I want to head down to the Gay Dolphin and look at Shark Teeth or stand outside The Bowery and listen to those sweet sounds! It’s a great place to unwind while taking in all that downtown Myrtle has to offer. Check it out.

The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk

When you think of a beach boardwalk, images of the glory days of Atlantic City or Coney Island probably come to mind. You can probably still envision the carnival games, food vendors, and barkers loudly selling their beachwear, trinkets, games, and rides. Close your eyes, breathe deep, and you can probably smell the funnel cake, cotton candy, and hot dogs mingling with the warm, salty air. Do I hear Seagulls?

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is home to a relatively new attraction that is becoming one of its most distinctive and recognizable draws: The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. Built in 2010, you’ll find this well constructed, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing walkway to be a defining character to the heart of the Grand Strand.

Ranked in the top ten of many review sites, magazines, and publications, the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk holds its own when compared to the staples in Atlantic City, Coney Island, and Ocean City. Travel and Leisure named Myrtle Beach the number 2 boardwalk in the country, based on the fantastic entertainment and food options. There’s something for everyone here, where modern entertainment mixes with the classic Grand Strand nostalgia of yesteryear.

Originally 1.2 miles long, the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk has been extended beyond 18^th ave North to accommodate newer resorts. Along with the boardwalk, downtown Myrtle Beach area hosts great shops, restaurants, hotels, rides, attractions, and entertainment. The Famous Myrtle Beach Skywheel is nestled perfectly as the centerpiece of the boardwalk and features Jimmy Buffet’s Landshark Bar and restaurant. Here are some of the best features:

The Bowery is one of the most legendary establishments in South Carolina. Since 1944, it has been delighting visitors and locals alike with country and southern rock. This longtime honky-tonk bar is a country music icon and is best known for hiring the world famous super group, Alabama as their house band. This place takes you back to the “glory days” of Myrtle Beach, before high rises dominated the landscape.

Peaches Corner is a MUST VISIT on your boardwalk experience. This place is older than the CITY of Myrtle Beach! The best way to describe their burgers and dogs is “PERFECT”. Since 1937, Peaches has helped define Myrtle Beach as one of the best food destinations on the East Coast.

Second Avenue Pier allows visitors to venture farther out into the Atlantic Ocean than anywhere else on the Grand Strand without taking a boat or plane. This pier gives guests the rare chance to stroll 900 feet out over the ocean waves and get a spectacular view of both the sea and the city skyline back on dry land. By day, this wooden walkway is a hub of activity as anglers fish the deeper waters in hopes of hooking a big one. Depending on the season, sea bass, flounder, Spanish mackerel and trout are among the species regularly caught from the pier. As the southernmost point of the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, Second Avenue Pier is only a short stroll from Plyler Park, where free concerts are held throughout the summer months, as well as all the great shopping, dining and attractions.

Gay Dolphin Gift Cove has been one of the most recognizable locales in Myrtle Beach since 1946. Calling itself “The Nation’s Largest Gift Shop”, you’ll find not only typical beach items, but the most unique gifts ranging from fine art, collectibles, jewelry, toys, and the largest collection of Shark teeth and ocean finds in the south. Located at 910 North Ocean Blvd, The Gay Dolphin should be on everyone’s vacation to-do list!

Myrtle Beach Golf Cart Safety

The Grand Strand of South Carolina welcomes over fourteen million guests each year from around the world. They come to our small piece of paradise and sometimes forget that there are rules and regulations to follow, or they may run afoul of the law. Some of the most misunderstood rules that apply to the Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach areas pertain to golf carts. A very lucrative industry in most beach resorts is golf cart rentals. Back in the day, golf carts were used as a means of transporting a golf twosome, and their bags, from hole to hole while playing golf. Boy, have the times have changed!

Today, vacationers come to the beach with a golf cart rental already reserved. While the rental companies are bound to instruct and advise these renters, most people, quite frankly, don’t listen. They are too excited to pay attention. With that in mind, I thought it might be helpful to read these instructions before you arrive. Read these rules carefully; it could save you a lot of grief and money!!

In 2011, the state of South Carolina implemented a golf cart law specifically for carts that are used for a purpose other than golf.

Anyone operating a golf cart must be at least 16 years old and have a valid driver’s license. This sounds like a no-brainer, but there are times when vacationers forget to bring their common sense on vacation. IF YOU’RE YOUNGER THAN 16, DO NOT DRIVE A GOLF CART!
A golf cart may not travel more than four miles from your rental unit.
Golf carts may only travel on secondary roads with a posted speed limit of 35 mph or less. You may only cross an intersection of a major thoroughfare.
A licensed driver is allowed to operate a golf cart during day light hours only; from dawn until dusk.
All necessary paperwork and permits must stay with the cart while in operation
You can get a DUI while driving a golf cart on secondary roads.
A passenger can be arrested if there is an open container in the golf cart while in operation.
Do not drive a golf cart on sidewalks. Sidewalks are used as a conveyance for pedestrians only.
Be aware, at all times, of your surroundings. A golf cart offers neither safety nor protection in the event of a crash.

Every summer there are numerous accidents, and they range from a small dent to death. Please be careful if you’re coming to the beach and rent a golf cart. Just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean that everyone is. Many of us are locals who are heading to and from work. Sometimes we drive too fast or get distracted, just like you do when you’re home going to and from work.

From a Myrtle Beach newspaper: “A Myrtle Beach man is in jail after authorities say he crashed his golf cart into a vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol.”

From WBTW TV station: “North Myrtle Beach officials confirm one woman was killed after a driver crashed into a golf cart Wednesday evening in the 1500 block of Havens Drive around 6 p.m.”

From WBTW TV Station: “One person is dead after a crash involving a golf cart Thursday in North Myrtle Beach, according to Chief Garry Spain, with the North Myrtle Beach Fire Department.”

Be Safe, be aware, and slow down. After all, you’re on vacation!
